The Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) is a crucial emissions control component in all modern Peugeot diesel vehicles. When working correctly, it captures harmful soot particles. When it goes wrong, it can cause significant problems and expensive repairs.

How Does the DPF Work?

The DPF captures soot from exhaust gases and stores it until the filter can “regenerate” – a process where the soot is burned off at high temperatures. This happens automatically during normal driving when conditions are right.

Passive Regeneration

Occurs automatically during motorway driving when exhaust temperatures are naturally high enough (around 600°C) to burn off soot.

Active Regeneration

When passive regeneration can’t occur (city driving), the engine management system injects extra fuel to raise exhaust temperatures and trigger regeneration.

Common DPF Problems

Blocked DPF

If regeneration cycles are repeatedly interrupted (short journeys, stop-start driving), the DPF becomes blocked. Symptoms include:

  • DPF warning light illuminated
  • Loss of power / limp mode
  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Difficulty starting
  • Strong smell from exhaust

DPF Pressure Sensor Failure

The pressure differential sensor monitors DPF condition. When it fails, the system can’t accurately measure soot loading, leading to either excessive regeneration attempts or no regeneration at all.

DPF Warning Light: What To Do

When the DPF light illuminates:

  1. Don’t ignore it – the problem will get worse
  2. Try a regeneration drive – 20-30 minutes of motorway driving at 2500+ RPM
  3. Check your oil level – DPF issues can dilute engine oil
  4. Seek professional help – if the light stays on or flashes

Our DPF Services

At Peugeot Engines, we offer comprehensive DPF cleaning and repair services:

  • DPF Diagnostics – Accurate assessment of DPF condition
  • Forced Regeneration – Professional regeneration using diagnostic equipment
  • DPF Cleaning – Chemical and thermal cleaning to restore flow
  • Sensor Replacement – Pressure and temperature sensor repairs
  • DPF Replacement – When cleaning isn’t viable, quality replacement parts

Preventing DPF Problems

  • Take regular longer journeys (20+ miles at motorway speeds)
  • Use the correct engine oil specification
  • Maintain regular service intervals
  • Don’t ignore warning lights
  • Address other engine faults promptly (as they can prevent regeneration)
