The PSA 1.5 BlueHDi diesel engine has become one of the most talked-about powertrains in the automotive world – and unfortunately, not for good reasons. If you own a Peugeot, Citroën, DS, Vauxhall, or Toyota fitted with this engine, or you’re considering buying one, this guide will tell you everything you need to know about the problems affecting these units.

As specialists who work on these engines daily, we’ve seen hundreds of cases of 1.5 BlueHDi failures. We know exactly what goes wrong, why it happens, and most importantly, how to prevent it.

Which Vehicles Are Affected?

The 1.5 BlueHDi engine (internal codes DV5RC and DV5RD) was introduced in 2017 and has been fitted to a wide range of vehicles:

Peugeot

  • 208 (2019 onwards)
  • 2008 (2019 onwards)
  • 308 (2017 onwards)
  • 3008 (2017 onwards)
  • 5008 (2017 onwards)
  • Partner/Rifter (2018 onwards)
  • Expert (2017 onwards)

Citroën

  • C3 (2017 onwards)
  • C3 Aircross (2017 onwards)
  • C4 (2020 onwards)
  • C4 Cactus (2018 onwards)
  • C5 Aircross (2018 onwards)
  • Berlingo (2018 onwards)
  • Dispatch (2017 onwards)

DS

  • DS 3 Crossback
  • DS 4
  • DS 7 Crossback

Vauxhall/Opel

  • Grandland X (2018 onwards)
  • Combo (2018 onwards)
  • Vivaro (2019 onwards)

Toyota

  • Proace (2017 onwards)
  • Proace City (2019 onwards)

If your vehicle has a 1.5 litre diesel engine and was manufactured from 2017 onwards, there’s a high probability it uses the DV5 engine.

The Core Problem: Timing Chain Failure

The fundamental issue with the 1.5 BlueHDi is premature timing chain failure. To understand why this is so serious, you need to understand what the timing chain does.

What Is a Timing Chain?

The timing chain connects the crankshaft (which turns the wheels via the gearbox) to the camshaft (which opens and closes the engine’s valves). It ensures that the valves open and close at precisely the right moment in relation to the position of the pistons.

This timing is absolutely critical. If the chain stretches, slips, or breaks, the synchronisation is lost. In what’s called an “interference engine” (which the 1.5 BlueHDi is), this causes the pistons and valves to collide.

The Design Flaw

The original 1.5 BlueHDi engines were fitted with a 7mm timing chain. Through a combination of factors – the chain specification, the tensioner design, and the oil flow to these components – this chain can stretch prematurely.

Unlike a timing belt (which simply snaps), a timing chain stretches gradually. As it stretches, the valve timing becomes increasingly inaccurate. Eventually, the chain can slip or jump over the sprocket teeth, or the tensioner can fail entirely.

The Consequences

When timing chain failure occurs, the results are catastrophic:

  • Bent valves – The valves are struck by the pistons and bent beyond repair
  • Damaged pistons – The piston crowns can crack or shatter
  • Cylinder head damage – The valve seats and guides are often damaged
  • Potential block damage – In severe cases, connecting rods can bend and damage the engine block

In most cases, the damage is so extensive that engine replacement is the only economical option. We’ve seen repair quotes from main dealers ranging from £6,000 to £10,000+ for engine replacement.

Warning Signs to Watch For

One of the frustrating aspects of the 1.5 BlueHDi timing chain issue is that it doesn’t always give much warning. However, there are symptoms you should never ignore:

Audible Warnings

  • Rattling or clattering on startup – Particularly in the first few seconds after a cold start, before the oil has fully circulated
  • Continuous rattling from the engine – A stretched chain will produce a distinctive rattling sound
  • Whining or grinding noises – Can indicate tensioner or guide wear

Dashboard Warnings

  • Check engine light – Timing issues will trigger fault codes related to camshaft/crankshaft correlation
  • Engine management light – May illuminate before more serious symptoms appear

Performance Issues

  • Rough idling – The engine may run unevenly at idle
  • Misfires – Particularly noticeable under load
  • Loss of power – The engine may feel sluggish or down on power
  • Poor fuel economy – Incorrect timing affects combustion efficiency

Serious Warning Signs

  • Engine cutting out – If the engine suddenly stops while driving, do not attempt to restart
  • Failure to start with unusual noises – If the engine cranks but won’t fire and sounds different, stop trying immediately

What to Do If You Suspect a Problem

If you notice any of the warning signs described above, time is of the essence:

  1. Stop driving immediately – Pull over safely as soon as possible
  2. Do not restart the engine – If the engine has stopped or is making serious noises, attempting to restart can cause additional damage
  3. Call for recovery – Have the vehicle transported rather than driven
  4. Contact a specialistOur emergency line is available for exactly these situations

The difference between catching a timing chain issue early and suffering complete engine failure can literally be the difference between a £1,500 repair and a £7,000+ engine replacement.

The Solution: Upgraded Timing Chain Kit

PSA has acknowledged the issue and developed an upgraded timing chain kit featuring an 8mm chain (compared to the original 7mm), along with improved tensioners and guides.

At our specialist workshop, we exclusively use these upgraded components when carrying out timing chain replacements. The upgraded kit addresses the fundamental design weakness and should provide reliable service for the life of the vehicle.

What Does Replacement Involve?

Timing chain replacement on the 1.5 BlueHDi is a significant job that requires:

  • Removal of the front of the engine
  • Precise timing of the camshaft and crankshaft
  • Replacement of the chain, tensioner, guides, and associated seals
  • Careful reassembly and timing verification

This is not a job for a general mechanic unfamiliar with these engines. Incorrect timing during reassembly will cause immediate engine damage. That’s why it’s essential to use a specialist with specific experience on PSA engines.

Should You Replace the Chain Preventively?

This is the question we’re asked most often, and our answer is generally yes – particularly if:

  • Your vehicle has covered more than 50,000 miles
  • Your vehicle is more than 4 years old
  • You plan to keep the vehicle long-term
  • You use the vehicle for essential journeys (work, family commitments)

The cost of preventive replacement is typically £1,200-£1,800 depending on the specific vehicle. Compare this to £6,000-£10,000 for engine replacement after a failure, and the maths becomes clear.

Think of it like insurance: you’re paying to eliminate a known risk. Given how many failures we’ve seen on these engines – including vehicles with full service histories and careful owners – we believe preventive replacement is money well spent.

Has PSA Issued a Recall?

This is a source of frustration for many owners. Despite the widespread nature of the problem, PSA has not issued a formal recall for the timing chain issue. There have been service campaigns in some markets, and individual dealers have sometimes offered goodwill repairs, but there’s no consistent policy.

If your vehicle has suffered timing chain failure, it’s worth contacting Peugeot, Citroën, or your relevant brand’s customer service to request a contribution to repair costs. Success varies, but some owners have received partial goodwill payments, particularly if the vehicle is relatively new or low mileage.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many miles can I expect before problems occur?

Unfortunately, there’s no safe mileage. We’ve seen failures at 25,000 miles and we’ve seen vehicles reach 80,000 miles without issue. The problem is unpredictable, which is why we recommend preventive replacement rather than waiting for symptoms.

Does regular servicing prevent the problem?

Regular servicing with the correct oil is essential for engine longevity, but it won’t prevent the fundamental design issue with the timing chain. Well-maintained vehicles can and do suffer failures.

Can I continue driving if I hear a slight rattle?

We strongly advise against it. A “slight” rattle can become a catastrophic failure within days or even hours. Have the vehicle inspected immediately.

Are the newer 1.5 BlueHDi engines better?

PSA has made revisions to the engine over time, and vehicles produced from late 2020 onwards may have improved timing chain systems fitted from the factory. However, we’d still recommend monitoring these engines carefully.
